The Super Bowl has always been a time to gather in front of the TV, eat junk food, and cheer on their favorite athletes. Of course, it’s also an occasion marked by corporations spending absurd amounts of money on commercials that will only air once before vanishing into the ether. With the Big Game fast approaching, many of these ads have already started making their way online. However, Walmart has become an early contender for having the most memorable spot of the night.
The retail giant just premiered its own pop culture-obsessed commercial for Super Bowl LIV. Clearly, they spared no expense. The spot is similar to the one Walmart aired for their grocery pickup service, which debuted last year. But while that ad concentrated on famous vehicles from various films and TV shows, this new ad has even more to get the nostalgia juices flowing. The company actually enlisted a few stars from Hollywood’s most bankable franchises to make cameo appearances. As it turns out, they all visit the same place for their shopping needs.

Among the notable cameos is Sam Jones as Flash Gordon, who makes a heroic entrance on his rocket cycle. We’re also treated to appearances by the cast of The LEGO Movie, the aliens from Mars Attacks, C-3PO and R2-D2, and Men in Black’s Frank the Pug. And if you can’t wait for the Bill and Ted Face the Music trailer to drop? Not a problem. Alex Winter shows up as both the present-day Bill S. Preston, Esq. and his younger self.
Perhaps most surprisingly, the spot also features a parody of Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. The movie was a hit with critics and audiences and even got some love at the Oscars in 2017. Regardless, it’s a little jarring to see it referenced alongside more action-oriented blockbuster films.
Super Bowl LIV airs this Sunday, February 2. You can check out Walmart’s new spot below, then tell us what you think in the comment section!
