Avatar 2’s Crew Has Landed in New Zealand To Finish Production

A little over a week ago, producer Jon Landau announced that Avatar 2’s crew would be returning to New Zealand to complete work on the long-awaited sequel. Now, Landau has confirmed that his team, including director James Cameron, has finally landed in the country. But their continued work on the film comes with a caveat. The crew members must quarantine themselves for a two-week period in order to safeguard against the spread of COVID-19.

To mark the occasion, Landau posted an Instagram photo of himself and Cameron wearing surgical masks shortly after their plane landed. You can check it out for yourself below.

The effects of the coronavirus have been felt all over the world, but New Zealand has become a masterclass in how to contain the epidemic. Last week, NPR reported that the country currently has only one active COVID-19 case. As a result of their containment efforts, the government also recently approved new health and safety protocols for resuming film and TV productions. Cameron, Landau, and their fellow crew members having to isolate themselves is a major component of those protocols.

According to Variety, Landau and Cameron were on a “chartered New Zealand plane” carrying 54 passengers. However, it’s not clear if any of Avatar 2’s stars, such as Sam Worthington or Zoe Saldana, were also on the plane.

Avatar 2 will open in theaters on December 17, 2021.
