Another one of Disney’s most popular attractions is about to get new life on the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the studio is developing a Space Mountain feature film.
Disney has also enlisted Joby Harold to write the movie. Currently, Harold is working on Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+. He also wrote Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and was an executive producer on John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. But unlike those films, THR says his Space Mountain screenplay will be a “family adventure.”
Harold is also producing with his wife Tory Tunnell, through their Safehouse Pictures banner. The original Space Mountain roller coaster opened at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in 1975. Two years later, Disneyland premiered its own take on the ride, with newer versions opening in Tokyo, Paris, and Hong Kong in the years that followed.

Disney has obviously enjoyed varying degrees of success with movies based on its theme park installations. The best example is the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which has made over $4.5 billion worldwide. Additionally, the studio has produced films based on The Haunted Mansion, The Country Bears, and Tower of Terror, to name a few. The studio’s next ride-based movie, Jungle Cruise, hits theaters next year.
The report also notes that although several Disney films have recently gone straight to Disney+ amid the ongoing pandemic, the studio is committed to releasing Space Mountain in theaters.
