Sony kicked off the blockbuster season a little early this year with Bloodshot, an adaptation of the Valiant Comics superhero. Unfortunately, the film opened just as the coronavirus made its way to the U.S. and prompted movie theaters to close. That put a nasty dent in its box office intake. But according to the CEO of Valiant’s parent company, DMG, this isn’t keeping the movie from getting a sequel. According to Dan Mintz, Vin Diesel is already set to reprise his starring role in Bloodshot 2.
CBR recently caught up with Mintz to discuss Bloodshot’s franchise potential. Surprisingly, he appeared to cite the first film’s VOD and home media performances as the drivers behind a sequel.
“I think [Bloodshot] was very successful in that respect,” said Mintz. “A lot of people saw it and it did very well in the post-release rollout but you can’t use the same evaluation process, pre-COVID, to this. [Are] Vin Diesel and all those people going to still continue? Yes, because it did so well and the response to it has been so well, it’s just that the response has been in a non-transparent environment, as opposed to a transparent environment like box office numbers.”

Mintz’s comments are somewhat surprising. After all, Bloodshot only raked in $33.48 million (via Box Office Mojo), and failed to recoup its $45 million budget. The movie arrived on VOD less than two weeks after its March theatrical debut, and later hit Blu-ray in May. In August, AMC announced that Bloodshot would be getting a second theatrical run as theaters were getting ready to re-open.
As of now, neither Sony nor any major trade publication has confirmed that a Bloodshot sequel is in the works. Regardless, Hollywood still has big plans for the Valiant Comics library. Bloodshot was supposed to be the first big-screen entry in the Valiant cinematic universe.
