Sony Pushes Back Morbius’ Release Date To October

It looks like Michael Morbius will have to wait a few more months to satisfy his bloodlust. According to Variety, Sony has chosen to delay its Morbius film, which stars Jared Leto as the titular living vampire. The movie was originally going to premiere on March 19. But now, the studio has postponed its release to October 8.

Sony’s announcement comes almost a full year after they premiered the movie’s first trailer, which offered the first glimpse at Leto’s take on the longtime Spider-Man villain. This isn’t the first time that the studio has delayed Morbius. Previously, Sony set a July 2020 premiere date for the film. However, the coronavirus pandemic forced Sony to rethink its game plan, and the ongoing health crisis is likely to blame for this latest setback as well. Morbius is the second entry in Sony’s MCU-adjacent Marvel universe made up entirely of Spider-Man supporting characters. The studio previously kicked off this series of films with Venom in 2018.

By moving the film to this fall, Sony could be hoping to repeat the financial success of Venom‘s October release. But even if vaccines are widely available by then, there’s no guarantee that fans will flock back to the movie theaters. It also doesn’t help that Sony is pitting the film against Dune, which opens a week prior and could potentially give Morbius a run for its money at the box office.

Morbius is one of several Spider-Man adjacent Marvel movies that Sony currently has in the works. Last year, the studio hired J.C. Chandor to direct their standalone Kraven the Hunter feature. Olivia Wilde is also onboard to direct another film centering on a female character, presumably Spider-Woman. Other upcoming projects include vehicles for Black Cat, Silver Sable, Madame Web, and more.
