Sony Pushes Morbius’ Premiere Back By One Week

Morbius can’t seem to catch a break. According to Deadline, Sony has once again pushed back the release of its upcoming Marvel movie, making this the fifth time the film has been postponed.

The film’s latest shift is nothing too drastic. Instead of hitting theaters on January 21, 2022, Morbius will now hit theaters one week later on January 28. That same day, Universal and Blumhouse are also planning to release The Black Phone, the new film from Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson. So it should be interesting to see which movie comes out on top at the box office.

If not for the coronavirus pandemic, Morbius would have opened last July. The outbreak initially forced Sony to move the film to March of this year. But obviously, this didn’t stick. Sony previously set an October release date before taking it off its 2021 calendar altogether.

Morbius isn’t the only Sony tentpole that has fallen victim to multiple delays over the last year. Other upcoming releases like Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Uncharted were repeatedly shuffled around as well. Regardless, the studio still has two big blockbusters on track to hit theaters this fall: Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Jared Leto is headlining Morbius as the titular living vampire. Daniel Espinosa directed the film from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The cast also includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson.
