Dave Bautista Doesn’t See a Future For Drax Beyond Guardians 3
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has hit a few bumps in the road over the last few years, largely due to James Gunn’s firing and subsequent re-hiring as the film’s director. However, the film will finally hit theaters in 2023. But since Vol. 3 will wrap up the story that Gunn began with the original Guardians film in 2014, there’s a good chance it will be the last time we see some of its heroes. According to Dave Bautista, Drax might be one of those characters.
While speaking with Digital Spy, Bautista ruminated on his character’s big screen future after Guardians 3. Apparently, the next film in the Guardians saga fulfills all of his contractual obligations for Marvel Studios. And while he’s game for a potential Drax/Mantis buddy movie, it sounds like the Destroyer’s days in the MCU are numbered.
“There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film,” said Bautista. “It was really because it was James Gunn’s idea. He really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film. He laid it out to me. I thought it was such a brilliant idea, but I haven’t heard any follow-up from the studio.”

“I don’t think they’re very interested, or it doesn’t fit into the way they have things mapped out,” continued Bautista. “But other than that, no. I mean, as far as my obligations, I’ve got Guardians 3, and that’s probably going to be the end of Drax.”
Bautista isn’t the only one hinting about leaving the Guardians franchise behind these days. While responding to a fan on Twitter this week, Gunn once again claimed that the next Guardians film will be his last. Regardless, Bautista is still waiting on the latest draft of the threequel’s screenplay.
“I don’t know what the script of the third film is, to be honest with you,” added Bautista. “There was a script years ago that obviously is going to have to change because the whole direction of the Marvel universe has changed.”
Bautista will next show up as Drax in Thor: Love and Thunder, which hits theaters one year from today. Marvel will release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023.
