According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is courting some serious star power to headline the reboot of The Haunted Mansion. The studio is apparently in talks with LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish to headline its new film based on the popular theme park attraction.
Disney has been developing a fresh take on The Haunted Mansion for years. The attraction was previously adapted as a movie in 2003 with Eddie Murphy in the lead, although the film was ultimately panned by critics. In 2010, Guillermo del Toro signed on to write and produce a new adaptation that would have leaned more into the ride’s horror aspects. Regardless, that version never saw the light of day. Justin Simien, who previously helmed Dear White People and Bad Hair, was signed to direct the reboot earlier this year. Katie Dippold, a Parks and Recreation alum who also co-wrote 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot, is penning the script.
Similar to the 2003 film, the reboot will focus on a family who moves into the namesake abode. If all goes well, Stanfield will play a widower “who once believed in the supernatural but is now a rather lifeless tour guide in New Orleans’s French Quarter.” Haddish will co-star as a psychic who is hired to speak with the dead. The movie will shoot in Louisiana later this year.

Stanfield is coming off an Oscar-nominated turn in Judas and the Black Messiah. More recently, he provided the title character’s voice in Netflix’s Yasuke anime. Haddish headlined Bad Trip, which hit Netflix back in February. She will next appear opposite Oscar Isaac in Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter.
Disney hasn’t set a release date for The Haunted Mansion yet.
