J.K. Simmons In Negotiations To Play Commissioner Gordon In Batgirl

Earlier this month, singer-turned-actress, Leslie Grace was cast as Barbara Gordon in the Batgirl movie. While that film’s connection to The Batman or the DC Extended Universe was previously unknown, it looks like we have our answer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, J.K. Simmons is in talks to reprise his role as Barbara’s father, Commissioner James Gordon. Simmons originally played Gordon in Justice League. He was also going to appear in The Batman. However, those plans scrapped when Ben Affleck left the project. Instead, director Matt Reeves opted for a full reboot, with Jeffrey Wright as Gordon and Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

THR also noted that Simmons’ initial contract was a three-movie deal. However, the current report appears to indicate that he would have to sign a new contract to return. Regardless, Simmons has previously indicated a willingness to revisit Gordon.

Warner Bros. hasn’t commented on THR’s report.

The report also indicates that Batgirl is “casting up swiftly,” with an eye towards a 2022 debut on HBO Max. Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) wrote the script. Bad Boys For Life co-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will helm the film. Production will likely begin later this year.
