Matthew Vaughn Confirms DC Has ‘Reached Out,’ Addresses The Authority Rumors

Matthew Vaughn has confirmed that DC has reached out to him about potentially helming a project.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Vaughn said he’s had conversations with James Gunn and Peter Safran about doing a project for DC. He also addressed rumors claiming he’s attached to the studios’ The Authority movie.

“DC has reached out,” Vaughn said. “Gunn and Peter, we’ve been talking, and they’re great. James, you know, he reinvents Superman.”

When asked specifically about The Authority, Vaughn said, “Never say never. At the moment, I’m very much enjoying creating my own things…I think Gunn — the franchise or DC is in the best hands it has been in for a long time, so let’s see what happens.”

What is DC’s The Authority movie?

In January 2023, Gunn announced The Authority, which is based on characters created by  Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch for WildStorm (WildStorm was acquired by DC and then the characters were formally introduced into the publisher’s continuity in 2011), would be part of the first chapter of the DCU, “Gods and Monsters.”

“So this is one of my real passion projects,” Gunn said, via Collider. “I’ve been working really hard on it with the writers, we’re starting to put together the entire story. […] This is a big movie. […] I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the authority WildStorm characters. WildStorm was a comics imprint that was bought by DC that I really love, we’re moving a lot of these WildStorm characters into the DCU.”

He continued, “The Authority is a very different kind of superhero story. They’re basically good intentions, but they think that the world is completely broken. And the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments, you know, whatever they want to do to make the world better, and we’ll see how that journey goes for them. But as I said earlier, there are morally gray characters, which these are.”

The official cast, crew, and a potential release date for DC’s The Authority have not yet been announced.
