Zack Snyder Still Hasn’t Seen Joss Whedon’s Cut of Justice League

Zack Snyder still hasn’t seen Joss Whedon’s cut of Justice League.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder reflected on the production of 2017’s Justice League. Noting that he wasn’t trying to make an Avengers movie when Justice League was in production, Snyder revealed he still hasn’t watched Whedon’s cut of the film.

“We cared deeply about what we were doing,” Snyder said. “We weren’t trying to make an Avengers movie. We weren’t. We didn’t know how, quite frankly. They brought someone in that did. I’ve never seen the [Whedon version], but it wasn’t the answer.”

Snyder also told Wired in a recent interview that he hasn’t seen Whedon’s cut of Justice League; however, his wife, Deborah Snyder, has.

“To be honest, I have never seen the theatrical Warner Bros. cut of Justice League,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot about it. My wife was forced to watch it.”

What happened with DC’s Justice League movie?

Following 2013’s Man of Steel and 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC Studios hired Snyder to direct a Justice League movie. Snyder completed most of the filming; however, he stepped away from the project in 2017 following a family tragedy

Whedon was brought in to finish the movie as an uncredited director. Popular at the time for directing 2012’s The Avengers, Whedon oversaw script rewrites and reshoots for Justice League, which then resulted in a very different, lighter version of the movie compared to what Snyder had envisioned.

Justice League was released in theaters in November 2017. It was met with mixed reviews from critics and was considered to be a box office bomb, as it reportedly needed $750 million to break even but only made $657.9 million at the global box office.

Snyder’s version of Justice League, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, was later released on HBO Max in March 2021.
