Zack Snyder Personally Called James Gunn After Gunn Got the DC Job

Zack Snyder called James Gunn after Gunn and Peter Safran were hired as the new chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder recalled how he was filming a scene for his upcoming Rebel Moon space opera when he heard the news that Gunn and Safran had been hired as co-chairmen and co-CEOs for DC Studios.

“I called him and said I wish all the best for him,” Snyder said. “I told him I wanted it to work.”

Zack Snyder and James Gunn have worked together before

Snyder and Gunn worked with one another on 2004’s Dawn of the Dead, a remake of George A. Romero’s 1978 film that was written by Gunn and directed by Snyder. Snyder also served as an executive producer on 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which was directed by Gunn.

Following Dawn of the Dead, Snyder went on to helm Watchmen in 2009 before he was then hired to direct 2013’s Man of Steel. He followed that up with 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before he began working on 2017’s Justice League. Snyder ultimately stepped away from Justice League before it was finished and Joss Whedon was brought in to replace him, with Snyder’s version — Zack Snyder’s Justice League — then being released on HBO Max in 2021.

Gunn and Safran were hired to take over DC Studios in October 2022, at which point they announced they’d be rebooting the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The brand-new DCU begins in 2024 with the animated Creature Commandos series before Gunn’s Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.

Snyder’s Rebel Moon (also known as Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire), meanwhile, is getting a limited theatrical release on December 15, 2023, before it hits Netflix on December 22, 2023. A sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is planned for April 19, 2024.
