James Gunn Comments on Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Casting: ‘Edge, Grace & Authenticity’

James Gunn has commented on Milly Alcock’s recent casting as the DCU’s Supergirl.

On Monday, January 29, 2024, House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock was officially cast as Supergirl in Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU.

Gunn took to Threads on Tuesday and confirmed the news, saying, “In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

While online rumors suggest that Alcock’s Supergirl might debut in 2025’s Superman: Legacy, this has not been confirmed at this time.

What do we know about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

It is known, however, that Alcock will later star in her own solo movie, based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic miniseries, which was published in 2021 and 2022.

In the DC miniseries, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl and Krypto travel to a far-off planet for Kara’s 21st birthday; however, she then becomes reluctantly involved in a revenge plot after meeting a young woman named Ruthye who requires her assistance.

Ana Nogueira is writing the screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. No director is attached at this time.

When Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was initially announced, Gunn said of the project, “We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Gunn and Safran’s DCU kicks off later this year with an animated Creature Commandos series. Following that, Superman: Legacy starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and more will hit United States theaters on July 11, 2025.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow does not yet have a release date.
