X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn expressed his praise for the casting of Milly Alcock in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow while revealing his interest in stepping into the director’s chair.
“I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan,” Vaughn said in an interview with BroBible to promote his latest movie, Argylle. “Met with her for this other project we’re working on — she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie — the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”
Vaughn continued by revealing how Alcock’s casting piqued his interest in potentially directing Supergirl. “No [I’m not pleading the fifth],” Vaughn said. “I was asked about doing The Flash way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast — if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero. But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing . . . so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it.”
What is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow about?
As part of the new DCU slate headed by DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the comic miniseries by Tom Kin and Bilquis Evely. Gunn described the project as follows: “We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Ana Nogueira is set to pen the screenplay while no director has yet to be attached. Additionally, Alcock’s Supergirl is rumored to make her debut appearance in Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, set for release in 2025. DC Studios has not confirmed the rumor.
