Madame Web director S.J. Clarkson recently teased that the upcoming superhero movie could be connected to other Sony/Marvel movies.
Despite previously stating that Madame Web was a standalone feature, Clarkson hinted to Total Film that the Marvel movie might feature small connections to other installments in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
“I’m really excited for you to see the film and the potential of what it could be, that’s for sure,” teased the director, refusing to give away too much about the movie’s place in the SSU. “But I would probably say watch this space,” she added.
Madame Web expands Sony’s Marvel film slate
Madame Web — the fourth installment in the SSU — follows Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson), “a New York City paramedic who starts to show signs of clairvoyance. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she must protect three young women from a mysterious adversary who wants them dead.”
The PG-13 rated superhero movie is currently tracking to earn between $25 million and $35 million domestically when it opens in theaters. For comparison, this would be worse than the $39 million Morbius opened to in 2022 and less than half the $80.3 million and $90.1 million Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned in 2018 and 2021, respectively.
Besides Johnson, Madame Web stars Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall/Spider-Woman, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon/Araña, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, with Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet cast in undisclosed roles.
Madame Web is scheduled to hit theaters on February 14, 2024.
