Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu shared that he is in the dark regarding his MCU future while expressing confidence in director Destin Daniel Cretton.
“Oh man, I don’t know to be honest,” Liu said to ComicBook.com on the red carpet for the premiere of his latest movie, Arthur the King. “I mean, those things are so above my pay grade. I just wanna continue to be a fan of it. You know, when I get a call of like, ‘Hey, this is what your in and this is where you’re going to show up. And, this is when you’re going to be need to be blacked out for.’ That’s kind of generally what tends to happen.”
Liu continued by praising Cretton and his involvement in the next Shang-Chi installment. “Destin is such a special filmmaker and we’re very happy to have him on the sequel,” Liu said. “So, he’ll be working on that and we’re really excited to see what he comes up with. I think he’s going to do a brilliant job.”
Liu’s MCU debut as Shang-Chi was a critical and commercial success in 2021 as audiences were slowly returning to the cinemas during the COVID-19 pandemic. The MCU installment grossed $432.2 million worldwide and holds a “Certified Fresh” rating of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Cretton signed on to Shang-Chi 2 shortly thereafter and was attached to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in 2022.
Destin Daniel Cretton’s next MCU projects
Cretton exited the Avengers sequel in late 2023 in what was reported to be an “amicable exit” between the director and Marvel. He turned his attention to Marvel and Disney+’s upcoming Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The series resumed production following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike. As for Shang-Chi 2, no further details from Marvel Studios have been revealed about the character’s next MCU installment.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now streaming on Disney+. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. Shang-Chi 2 does not have a release date.
