Director Zack Snyder has spoken about why a sequel was never made to his film adaptation of the acclaimed comic Watchmen.
Snyder appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience recently to discuss his films. At one point, he was asked by Rogan why a second Watchmen movie was never made, to which he gave a straightforward answer regarding the lack of a second Watchmen comic.
“Well, because, frankly, the comic book doesn’t exist,” the filmmaker explained. “For me, that’s why there wasn’t.”

2009’s Watchmen movie adaptation was directed by Snyder and written by David Hayter and Alex Tse. It stars Malin Åkerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson.
Was there any comic sequel to Watchmen?
The closest thing to a Watchmen follow-up comic was the DC event Doomsday Clock, which was published from 2017 to 2019. At the time, co-publisher Dan DiDio stated that it was a sequel to Watchmen, though the author of the event — Geoff Johns — disagreed with the assessment.
Doomsday Clock featured several Watchmen characters meeting some of DC’s most iconic heroes and villains, including Superman, Batman, Lex Luthor, and the Joker. The 12-issue series shows the world of Watchmen seven years after the ending of the original story as Ozymandias searches for Doctor Manhattan.
