Kirsten Dunst Mary Jane Watson Spider-Man: No Way Home

Kirsten Dunst Would Have Been in Spider-Man: No Way Home if Marvel Had Asked

Kirsten Dunst says she would’ve reprised her role as Mary Jane Watson in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home if Marvel had asked her.

Speaking with GQ Magazine, Dunst was asked if anyone from Marvel Studios asked her to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson in the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“No, no,” Dunst answered. “I would have.”

Kirsten Dunst wants to give Spider-Man an indie vibe

Dunst said she hasn’t seen Spider-Man: No Way Home, meaning she doesn’t know exactly how her character could’ve factored into the plot; however, she has some ideas regarding what the next chapter of MJ and Peter Parker’s story could look like.

“It would be funny to be like, OK, let’s take Tobey [Maguire] and I and do it in a weird indie way where it’s like a different kind of superhero film,” she said. “Like how they did that movie Chronicle. It could be cool.”

Dunst appeared in all three of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies alongside Maguire, including 2002’s Spider-Man, 2004’s Spider-Man 2, and 2007’s Spider-Man 3. “Sam Raimi was like a cult director, so it felt like we were making an indie disguised as a superhero film,” Dunst said of the first film.

Maguire ultimately reprised his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as did Andrew Garfield. A number of villains from previous Spider-Man movies — Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, and more — were also featured.

While there have been rumors suggesting Marvel Studios may be interested in having Raimi make a fourth Spider-Man movie with Maguire, the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director recently said he hadn’t heard anything about such a project as of yet. He did, however, recently express interest in helming Avengers: Secret Wars.

Dunst, meanwhile, will soon be seen in Alex Garland’s Civil War, which hits United States theaters on April 12, 2024.
