Comic-Con: Man of Steel, The Hobbit & Pacific Rim Panel Live Blog

Pacific Rim – From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.” When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse. “Pacific Rim” also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day.

Man of Steel – Henry Cavill plays Superman in director Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel.” The film also stars Amy Adams as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Laurence Fishburne as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Diane Lane and Kevin Costner. Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Michael Shannon, and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Ayelet Zurer, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Russell Crowe. Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Jackson returns to Middle-earth in an adventure that begins 60 years before the events depicted in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy. The first of two films adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular masterpiece, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” follows titular Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who-along with the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and a band of 13 Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage)-is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. The film’s ensemble cast includes Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lily, and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

Comment From Spoon
silas stuck at the bathroom line since 4am?

2:35
Silas Lesnick: We’re live!

2:35
ComingSoon.net: Here we go!

2:35
Silas Lesnick: WB opened the panel by revealing a special super-wide screen behind the curtain at the right of the stage!

2:36
Silas Lesnick: Footage is being shown from Pacific Rim!

2:37
Silas Lesnick: It’s happening on all the monitors at once and bleeds from one to another

2:37
Silas Lesnick: It’s actually not footage yet per-se. It’s a logo and filmed computer console, made to look like the whole of Hall H has become a command center

2:38
Silas Lesnick: They’re welcoming Guillermo Del Toro to the stage!

2:39
Silas Lesnick: Behind-the-scenes footage is playing on the monitors on silent as Guillermo says hello

2:39
Silas Lesnick: We see mech suits doing battle on a variety of terrains

2:40
Silas Lesnick: There’s a navy ship getting hit by a giant wave (with uncompleted FX)

2:40
Silas Lesnick: The mech suits have clear helmets in the front so that you can see the characters’ faces

2:41
Silas Lesnick: It looks like quite a bit of practical effects being shot.

2:41
Silas Lesnick: There’s a fight scene between mech suits in the rain

2:41
Silas Lesnick: After Comic-Con, Pacific Rim will go on press “radio silence” for the rest of the year

2:42
Silas Lesnick: “For those motherf–ers in the audience with their James Bond f–ing cameras, don’t use them,” says GDT

2:42
Silas Lesnick: The cast is taking the stage!

2:43
Silas Lesnick: Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi

2:44
Silas Lesnick: The footage looks like it’s going to play on a loop throughout the presentation

2:44
Silas Lesnick: They’re talking about Ron’s recent Make-a-Wish foundation appearance as Hellboy

2:45
Silas Lesnick: Rinko says she’s super-nervous about being at comic-con for the first time

2:45
Silas Lesnick: They’re showing the first big clip! Hold on…

2:48
EDouglasCS: I’m upstairs and the entire convention center is shaking.

2:49
EDouglasCS: From up here it sounds like they’re showing a giant monster battle… wish I could see it 🙁

2:49
Silas Lesnick: Wow, some truly impressive stuff!

2:50
Silas Lesnick: It’s a trailer. GDT explains that, in the world of the movie two pilots are needed to control the giant robots

2:50
Silas Lesnick: The robots are called Yeagers, I’m guessing after Chuck Yeager

2:50
EDouglasCS: Silas, it’s Jaegers actually.

2:51
Silas Lesnick: One pilot controls the left side of the robot and the other controls the right

2:51
Silas Lesnick: The energy surge from piloting the robot will kill a single pilot

2:51
Silas Lesnick: The footage is basically the trailer

2:51
Silas Lesnick: We see two men walking through an arctic terrain

2:52
Comment From Pap Stombol
Jaeger is German for Hunter, btw

2:52
Silas Lesnick: They’re using a metal detector and come across something. It looks like it’s a small statue

2:52
Silas Lesnick: One of the men looks out on the horizon and we see fear on his face.

2:52
Comment From SperrySHH
They use a Dance Dance Revolution style game pad to control

2:52
Silas Lesnick: A Jaegar is stumbling towards them and falls to it’s knees

2:52
EDouglasCS: Silas, I can fill in the blanks from my set visit… I’m under embargo but eff it. 🙂

2:52
Silas Lesnick: It has a cartoonish quality to it, but also very realistic. Think THE IRON GIANT if it was live action

2:53
Comment From Comiccon2012
They say when trailer is coming?

2:53
Silas Lesnick: We see a little bit of one monster attacking a bridge.

2:53
EDouglasCS: @ComicCon2012 I’m willing to bet it will be with Hobbit… not sure if they have enough ready for Dark Knight

2:53
Silas Lesnick: It’s mostly claws and we can’t see the body in whole, but think Godzilla with six arms

2:54
Silas Lesnick: There’s lots of footage of the men getting suited up. They have a number of different colors of mech suits

2:54
EDouglasCS: Silas, the colors represent different countries as each of them have their own Jaeger.

2:54
Silas Lesnick: (Guillermo says it’s “robot porn” with lots of “robot on kaiju action”

2:55
EDouglasCS: Silas, did we see Charlie Day or Ron Perlman in the footage at all?

2:55
Silas Lesnick: The tagline reads, “To fight monsters… We created monsters”

2:55
Silas Lesnick: There’s nine Kaijus throughout the film and 7 robots

2:56
Silas Lesnick: One of the robots looks to have Wonder Woman painted on it, like on WWII fighter planes.

2:56
Silas Lesnick: We hear an epic speech from Idris Elba

2:56
Silas Lesnick: “We’re at the edge of hope and the end of our time.”

2:57
Silas Lesnick: “But we choose to believe in each other.”

2:57
Silas Lesnick: “Today, we face the monsters at our door.”

2:57
Silas Lesnick: “Today, we cancel the apocalypse!”

2:58
Silas Lesnick: Hunnam says that GDT is one of maybe two filmmakers in the world that he would sign on for a project with without seeing a script

2:58
Silas Lesnick: It’s the first time the actors have seen any edited footage and they’re as excited at the Hall H crowd.

2:59
Silas Lesnick: Someone is asking about what happens when one pilot tries to drive a Jaeger

2:59
Silas Lesnick: GDT says that that will be shown in the film

3:00
Silas Lesnick: GDT is talking about the fine line of practical effects and CGI

3:01
Silas Lesnick: He says that he tried to “dirty the camera” to make it feel more real

3:01
Silas Lesnick: He frames shots so that the robots are so big that you can’t even get an ideal shot

3:01
Silas Lesnick: “No f–ing motion capture,” he says

3:01
Silas Lesnick: He says the robots shouldn’t move like humans so it’s all key frames

3:02
Silas Lesnick: There’s never going to be a scene where a monster is attacking and not actively fighting.

3:03
Silas Lesnick: He says that he hates scenes where one man fights 18 ninjas and beats them because, for some reason, all the ninjas don’t attack at once

3:03
Silas Lesnick: “This was kind of a f– that s–t situation,” he says

3:04
Silas Lesnick: He designed the sets so that entire city streets could be shook to mimic monsters

3:04
Silas Lesnick: stomping

3:04
Silas Lesnick: Three of the monsters are sea monsters

3:04
Silas Lesnick: Some are flying monsters

3:04
Silas Lesnick: “We have monsters up the wazoo,” says GDT

3:04
Silas Lesnick: A kid is asking if there are any familiar monsters like those from legends or myths

3:05
Silas Lesnick: GDT says, “Just Ron.”

3:05
Silas Lesnick: The full anatomy of the monsters has been designed

3:06
Silas Lesnick: That looks like it for PACIFIC RIM but we’ll be moving on to…

3:07
Silas Lesnick: They’re teasing MAN OF STEEL as coming up. “If Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan had a baby and named it Kal-El”

3:08
EDouglasCS: Now I’m hearing the footage from Man of Steel.. not shaking the convention center nearly as much.

3:09
EDouglasCS: Actually, it’s pretty loud…. can’t wait to hear what Silas is seeing downstairs

3:09
Silas Lesnick: We just got a GODZILLA trailer!

3:09
EDouglasCS: Oh sh*t…..

3:09
Silas Lesnick: The footage pans across a city that has been utterly destroyed

3:10
Silas Lesnick: We hear a voice over a radio talking about the end of the world

3:10
Silas Lesnick: It looks like another giant creature’s body is in the wreckage

3:10
Silas Lesnick: We hear the classic Godzilla scream

3:11
Silas Lesnick: from the smoke, we see something enormous. We’re following a camera up Godzilla’s back, showing his scales

3:11
Silas Lesnick: We see his face, but it’s almost a silhouette.

3:11
Silas Lesnick: It looks a LOT like the classic Godzilla design but with a slightly fatter face

3:11
Silas Lesnick: Gareth Edwards has taken the stage

3:12
Silas Lesnick: He says that he doesn’t think of it as a sci-fi movie because it’s very, very real

3:12
Silas Lesnick: Like the original, this isn’t going for camp on any level

3:12
Silas Lesnick: They make is sound like this trailer won’t be going online anytime soon

3:13
Silas Lesnick: Edwards says that he’s never been this emotionally involved and worked on something this long since he lost his virginity.

3:15
EDouglasCS: Did they just show the Godzilla trailer again? Thought I heard the Godzilla roar again.

3:15
Silas Lesnick: They just showed it again!

3:16
ComingSoon.net: It’s your mind talking Ed.

3:16
EDouglasCS: CS: 😛

3:16
Silas Lesnick: The opening WB and Legendary logos are B&W with a font like original Japanese writing

3:16
EDouglasCS: Silas, just remember who walked all the way over to get you that Hall H pass… I think you owe me a drink 🙂

3:17
Silas Lesnick: The narration is from Robert Oppenheimer

3:17
Silas Lesnick: “We knew the world would not be the same.”

3:17
Silas Lesnick: “Few people laughed.”

3:17
Silas Lesnick: “Few people cried.”

3:18
Silas Lesnick: “Most were silent.”

3:18
ComingSoon.net: Lots of questions about Man of Steel in the comments. It’s still coming guys, stay tuned.

3:18
Silas Lesnick: ” I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture”

3:18
Silas Lesnick: “the Bhagavad-Git… takes on his multi-armed form”

3:18
Silas Lesnick: (This is were we see the other, dead creature)

3:19
Silas Lesnick: “and says, ‘I am become death. Destroyer of worlds.”

3:19
EDouglasCS: Silas, what are you describing?

3:19
Silas Lesnick: That’s where we see Godzilla’s face and the logo

3:19
EDouglasCS: Oh, got it. That was the narration for the Godzilla teaser.

3:19
Silas Lesnick: Ed, that’s the narration in the trailer. It’s a Robert Oppenheimer quote about the atomic bomb.

3:20
Silas Lesnick: They panel has two surprise guests! Will Ferrell and Zach Galifaniakis are here for THE CAMPAIGN

3:21
ComingSoon.net: Godzilla teaser poster now online!
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=334848766598204&set=a.140245226058560.35805.117195465030203&type=1

3:21
Silas Lesnick: Like with Pacific Rim, the full screens are being used for the presentation

3:22
Silas Lesnick: We see campaign motion-posters for Brady and Huggins

3:22
EDouglasCS: Wide-screen Will Ferrell… not good.

3:22
Silas Lesnick: They’re about to show some footage…

3:27
Silas Lesnick: A very strong response to the footage! It was an extended trailer that shows a lot of different gags

3:28
Silas Lesnick: It all culminates with Will’s character accidentally punching a baby (he’s aiming for Zach) and we see, in slow motion, a baby’s face ripple as his fist goes into it

3:29
Silas Lesnick: Somehow the panel quickly turned into Will and Zach singing happy birthday to no one in particular

3:30
Silas Lesnick: Someone asked about real life political incidents that the cast finds funny.

3:30
Silas Lesnick: “The entire Bush administration,” says Zach.

3:30
Silas Lesnick: “Yep,” deadpans Will, “Those were a funny eight years.”

3:33
Silas Lesnick: “By the way, if you see Will walking around, he loves to stop and chat and take photos,” says Zach

3:33
Silas Lesnick: “Yes,” says Will. “I like to talk to the people. And Zach doesn’t.”

3:35
Silas Lesnick: Will is saying that THE CAMPAIGN takes place in a fictional city

3:35
Silas Lesnick: “San Diego is a fictional city,” says Will, “At least I thought it was when we wrote ANCHORMAN. Then we found out it was a real place.”

3:36
Silas Lesnick: Both guys are being challenged to do a campaign speech in character.

3:36
Silas Lesnick: “I would love to,” says Will, “But let’s have Zach start!”

3:37
Silas Lesnick: They’re doing it, but Zach jokes that the guy asking the question looks just like Rachel Maddow.

3:39
Silas Lesnick: That’s the end of THE CAMPAIGN.

3:39
Silas Lesnick: We’re heading into…

3:40
Silas Lesnick: MAN OF STEEL!

3:40
Silas Lesnick: The logo spins out, filling all the giant screens and changing from steel to the colored one we’ve seen

3:40
Silas Lesnick: Zack Snyder has taken the stage

3:41
Silas Lesnick: Shooting is completed and it’s all in post-production

3:42
Silas Lesnick: He says that, in the past, Superman has been a big blue boy scout on throne.

3:42
Silas Lesnick: He wants to make it so he can beat the s–t out of people

3:42
Silas Lesnick: We’re about to see footage and Zack is introing.

3:43
Silas Lesnick: “There’s a little movie coming out next weekend,” he says.

3:43
Silas Lesnick: The teaser will be on THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

3:43
ComingSoon.net: never heard of it.

3:44
Comment From destiny
whoever is posting on ComingSoon.net , i really like you man.

3:44
ComingSoon.net: Who says I’m a man?

3:44
ComingSoon.net: Okay, I am.

3:44
Comment From fb
You are a man. Man of Steel.

3:44
ComingSoon.net: Badabum!

3:46
Silas Lesnick: This looks VERY different from Superman films of the past

3:46
Silas Lesnick: We see flashes of Smallville. The farm house. Clark running in a red cape as a child.

3:46
Silas Lesnick: An older, bearded Clark walks a snowy road in an arctic town.

3:47
Silas Lesnick: We hear Russell Crowe’s voice talking about children being inspired to greater things

3:47
Silas Lesnick: It sounds like it’s cut with Kevin Costner’s voice. Both fathers are giving Clark/Kal advice on how to become who he wants to be

3:48
Silas Lesnick: We see Clark being brought to the Kent barn and shown the spaceship that has been hidden there

3:48
Silas Lesnick: Clark holds a small piece of metal with the S logo on the end

3:48
Silas Lesnick: We’re jumping back and forth through time periods

3:48
Silas Lesnick: Clark, as a teen, saved a bus of kids

3:49
Silas Lesnick: The bus crashed in the water and we see him swimming, pulling the door off.

3:49
Silas Lesnick: “People are afraid of what they don’t understand,” says Costner

3:49
Silas Lesnick: We see Clark talking to Jor-El. They’re standing right in front of one another, but I think it’s a holographic projection (though it looks live)

3:50
Silas Lesnick: We see Superman in the suit. First from a distance and then walking across a snowy plain

3:50
Silas Lesnick: There are flashing of Superman flying and one of him catching someone falling off a building

3:50
Silas Lesnick: A single flash of Amy Adams’ Lois Lane

3:51
Silas Lesnick: One flash has Superman (in costume) — seemingly in handcuffs — being led down a hallway by a security force

3:51
Silas Lesnick: We see Clark (without seeing his face) stepping into an elevator and begin to lift glasses to his face

3:52
Silas Lesnick: There’s a flash of Clark, shirtless, with his whole body on fire

3:52
Silas Lesnick: Another of him crashing into the bank vault we saw in the first still. It looks like he’s been thrown.

3:52
Silas Lesnick: Henry Cavill has taken the stage!

3:52
Silas Lesnick: Snyder says it’s a mix of a number of comic book storylines and not based on any single arc

3:53
Silas Lesnick: A man in a Superman hoodie is crying, he’s so excited o be asking a question

3:54
Silas Lesnick: They’re about to show the teaser again…

3:56
Comment From SupermanRules75
What kind of music does the trailer have?

3:58
Silas Lesnick: I’m not great at describing music, but it’s decidedly more somber than Williams’s score

3:58
Silas Lesnick: The whole look of it has a very dark, autumny feel to it all

3:58
Comment From Chris
Does it look Batman gritty?

3:58
Silas Lesnick: They’re showing a teaser poster now that is a medium shot of Superman with the face in shadows and the logo prominent on his chest

3:59
Silas Lesnick: Gritty isn’t the right world. It looks real, but not “dark”

3:59
Silas Lesnick: Two big shots that I didn’t see before…

3:59
Silas Lesnick: Superman climbing out of a pile of straws

3:59
Silas Lesnick: sorry, skulls

4:00
Silas Lesnick: And the military turning their weapons on Superman

4:00
Silas Lesnick: There’s a major discussion in the narration about the world turning against Superman because they don’t trust him if he ever appears

4:00
Silas Lesnick: We also hear a woman’s voice saying “My son saw what Clark did on that bus.”

4:00
ComingSoon.net: Any villain shots?

4:01

4:41
Silas Lesnick: We see another scene with Gandalf riding on a horse, meeting with Radagast.

4:41
Silas Lesnick: Played by Sylvester McCoy, Radagast seems to love animals and nature. We see him petting a hedgehog and letting birds into his hat

4:42
Silas Lesnick: He and Gandalf go somewhere — like a maze made of stone — but Radagast says, “What if it’s a trap?”

4:43
Silas Lesnick: “Turn away and go back,” says Gandalf as he draws a sword, moving foward. “It is most certainly a trap.”

4:43

4:44
Silas Lesnick: It leaps at him and looks like a human with a large beard, but it cuts away before we get a good look

4:44
Silas Lesnick: We see quite a bit the “Riddles in the Dark” chapter of the book, where Bilbo runs into Gollum in the cave

4:46
Silas Lesnick: He doesn’t know if that’s the case

4:52
Silas Lesnick: Elijah says he was only on set for a very brief period

4:55
Silas Lesnick: Actually, he says he’s pretty sure there WILL be extended cuts after all of THE HOBBIT

4:58
Silas Lesnick: “For f–s sake, do I have to?” he says, as Gollum

4:58
Silas Lesnick: Now he’s arguing back and forth with himself as Gollum about whether to do the voice or not
