Ghost in the Shell, Starring Scarlett Johansson, Set for 2017 Release

Walt Disney Pictures has today updated its release schedule and announced that Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) live-action take on Ghost in the Shell, a DreamWorks Pictures production, will hit the big screen on April 14, 2017!

Marvel’s The Avengers and Lucy star Scarlett Johansson will headline the adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s iconic cyberpunk manga series about the members of a covert ops unit that takes on technology-related crime. Ghost in the Shell was famously adapted into an animated feature in 1995.

Although it’s the first film to claim that specific 2017 date, Ghost in the Shell will open just one week after Guillermo del Toro’s much-anticipated Kaiju sequel, the tentatively-titled Pacific Rim 2and one week before a still-unrevealed Universal Monsters film.

Sanders will helm the feature from a script by William Wheeler with Avi Arad and Steven Paul producing with the backing of Steven Spielberg.

Johansson’s casting in Ghost in the Shell was one of the subjects feature on last week’s episode of our own weekly new series, Most Craved. Check out the full episode right here.

Also announced to have new dates are David Lowery’s remake of Pete’s DragonCraig Gillespie’s true-story The Finest Hours and Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. Check out all the details on those projects over at ComingSoon.net.
