Michael Giacchino Steps in as Rogue One Composer

Michael Giacchino is replacing Alexandre Desplat as the Rogue One composer

Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Rogue OneWalt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm‘s first “Star Wars Story” spinoff film, is today making a creative change. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the formerly-attached Alexandre Desplat is stepping down as the Rogue One composer due to a schedule conflict created as a result of the film’s recent reshoots. Replacing him will be Michael Giacchino who, in addition to being a massive fan of the franchise, took home an Academy Award for his work on Up.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story tells the tale of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. The film takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Felicity Jones (Inferno, The Theory of Everything) leads the cast as Jyn Erso alongside Mads Mikklesen who plays her father, Galen Erso. Diego Luna (Milk) stars as Captain Cassian Andor with Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Blade II) as the blind spiritual warrior Chirrut Imwe, Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly, Devils on the Doorstep) as his heavily armored best friend Baze Malbus,, Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as the droid K-2SO, Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Four Lions) as the Rebel pilot Bodhi Rook, plus Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) as Saw Gerrera, a character first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Ben Mendelsohn (BloodlineMississippi Grind) as the film’s main antagonist, Director Orson Krennic.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 16, 2016.
