Showtime’s upcoming Penny Dreadful sequel series just got a lot more interesting. According to Deadline, Nathan Lane has joined the cast of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Lane is playing Lewis Michener, a seasoned LAPD officer. His character is described as being “wise to the ways of the world and ruthless in pursuit of his goals.”
Whereas the original Penny Dreadful was set in Victorian England, City of Angels takes place in Los Angeles in 1938. Daniel Zovatto co-stars on the series as Tiago Vega, a detective investigating a murder case that draws him into the city’s ties with Mexican-American folklore. Additionally, he’ll encounter references to Third Reich espionage and radio evangelism. Tiago’s investigation gets to be so intense that it causes friction within his own family as well. Lane’s character will be Tiago’s partner and becomes something of a mentor to him over the course of the series. Game of Thrones‘ Natalie Dormer also joined the show last week as Magda, a shapeshifting demoness. Other cast members include Jessica Garza and Jonathan Nieves.

Lane’s acting career spans nearly four decades and a variety of different avenues from stage to screen. Most recently, he starred opposite Andrew Garfield in the Broadway revival of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America. His performance as Roy Cohn earned him a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. In 2016, Lane starred as F. Lee Bailey in the FX miniseries American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson. He also continues to have a recurring role on ABC’s Modern Family.
Production on City of Angels will begin later this year. The series comes from the original show’s creator, John Logan, who is writing and executive producing the new installment.
