HBO Puts a Hellraiser TV Series Into Development

Earlier this year, Spyglass announced plans to bring Clive Barker’s Hellraiser back to the big screen with David Bruckner attached to direct. However, HBO has its own plans for the demonic puzzle box. According to Deadline, a new Hellraiser TV series, unrelated to the film reboot, is in development at HBO. The series will also retain the mythology of the original films, with Pinhead as the leader of the Cenobites. Essentially, it will be a continuation of what came before instead of another reboot.

Additionally, Halloween (2018) director David Gordon Green is attached to helm the Hellraiser pilot and subsequent episodes as well. Mark Verheiden (Daredevil) and Michael Dougherty (Trick r’ Treat) will co-write the series. Green will also reunite with his frequent collaborators Danny McBride Jody Hill, and Brandon James as executive producers.

Barker introduced the concepts from Hellraiser in his novella, The Hellbound Heart. Within the subsequent films, a puzzle box called The Lament Configuration entices users to unwittingly open the door to Hell. All of the Cenobites, including Pinhead himself, were once human. However, they now serve Leviathan and harvest human souls for all of eternity.
