Seth Rogen is Developing a Darkwing Duck Reboot For Disney+

It’s been over three years since Disney gathered up a cast of A-list voice actors to reboot the fan-favorite DuckTales series. Now, Disney is about to try its luck with a revamped version of another beloved duck character. Variety is reporting that a Darkwing Duck reboot is in the works for Disney+.

The original Darkwing Duck series premiered in 1991. Legendary voice actor Jim Cummings provided the voice of the titular crimefighter and his alter-ego, Drake Mallard. The character was a clear parody of pulp heroes from the early 20th century, particularly The Shadow (whose real name was Kent Allard). Several characters from DuckTales, including Launchpad McQuack and Gizmoduck, were also featured in the cartoon’s supporting cast. The show aired three seasons spanning 91 episodes before concluding in 1992.

Variety’s report notes that the studio hasn’t lined up a writer to tackle to new series just yet. But apparently, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee will produce the reboot through their Point Grey Pictures banner. Most recently, it was announced that Point Gray is also hard at work on rebooting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.

Although Darkwing Duck has been off the air for decades, the character has made other appearances in the intervening years. Darkwing has also become a recurring character in Disney’s DuckTales reboot, with Chris Diamantopoulos stepping in for Cummings. It’s currently unclear if the reboot will have Diamantopoulos come back to voice the hero, or if Beck Bennett will reprise his DuckTales role as Launchpad.
