It seems that Ava DuVernay just can’t stay away from the DC Universe. The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker has set her sights on yet another DC property, but this one might not be as familiar to the average reader. According to Variety, DuVernay is developing a Naomi series for The CW.
If you’ve never heard of Naomi before, don’t be surprised. The character made her debut appearance less than two years ago in her own namesake comic book series in 2019. Created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and artist Jamal Campbell, Naomi was born on a parallel Earth where an environmental crisis gifted 29 random inhabitants with god-like abilities. When one of these individuals sought to destroy her, Naomi’s superpowered parents sent her to Prime Earth, where she was adopted by a couple in a small Oregon town. In her teen years, Naomi discovered that she inherited energy-based powers along with the ability to assume a superpowered form that gives her enhanced strength.

DuVernay will write and executive produce Naomi with former Arrow writer Jill Blankenship. Previously, Blankenship also worked as a writer and producer on TNT’s The Last Ship. As of now, it’s unclear whether The CW intends for Naomi to be part of its mainline Arrowverse franchise.
Naomi marks the third DC-related adaptation that DuVernay has in the works. Currently, she’s directing and executive producing HBO Max’s small-screen translation of Vertigo’s DMZ series. And of course, she’s still attached to helm Warner Bros.’ upcoming New Gods film. DuVernay is also writing the script for that movie with Tom King.
