What If…? Producer Addresses Series Continuity and Future

Marvel’s What If…? series, at least in the comics, explores how pivotal stories might have gone another way if one key detail changed. They are, by definition, not part of the main continuity. But that may not be exactly the case with the upcoming TV animated series. Because Loki recently made variants and the multiverse canon, there are ways to make allowances for all the possibilities. And in a press conference attended by Deadline, executive producer Brad Winderbaum hinted as much.

“It’s no coincidence that the show picks up right after Loki,” he said. “The multiverse has erupted in every possible direction. What if…? gives us a chance to explore that.” As far as its relevance to greater canon, he added, “I think that without going into great detail, I can tell you that What if…? as a project, as a story that exists in the MCU, is as important as any other and is woven into that tapestry.”

Fans can certainly speculate what effect it might have on such projects as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

At the same press conference, Winderbaum appeared to confirm future seasons, by saying that Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter will return. This version of Peggy Carter took the super-soldier serum in World War II, leaving Steve Rogers to pilot the Hydra Smasher mech.
