Netflix Acquires The Roald Dahl Story Company, Sets Expanded Universe

Expect much more from Roald Dahl to hit Netflix in the following months. Today, the streaming network announced in a press release that they acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company. Netflix previously revealed that they were working on a couple of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series from Taika Waititi. Now, they plan to create an expanded universe. It will span several formats, including live-action movies, TV series as well as live theater and much more.

“These stories and their messages of the power and possibility of young people have never felt more pertinent,” wrote Ted Sarandos, co-CEO and chief content officer at Netflix, and Luke Kelly, managing director at RDSC and the author’s grandson, in a joint statement. “As we bring these timeless tales to more audiences in new formats, we’re committed to maintaining their unique spirit and their universal themes of surprise and kindness, while also sprinkling some fresh magic into the mix.”

According to Variety, the deal will cover approximately $1 billion in production. But the Waititi animated shows aren’t the only work in progress. The company is also currently adapting Matilda: The Musical together with Sony and Working Title.

“Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company share a deep love of storytelling and a growing, global fan base. Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to write multiple new chapters of these beloved stories, delighting children and adults around the world for generations to come.”

Thus far, only Dahl’s stories for families seem under discussion, though the author also wrote books like Tales of the Unexpected for adults.
