One of the most critically-acclaimed sci-fi novels of the last 10 years is officially getting an adaptation from Apple TV+. According to Deadline, the streaming service has ordered a nine-episode series based on Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter, with Crouch himself acting as showrunner and executive producer. Additionally, Joel Edgerton has signed on to play the lead role of Jason Dessen.
Crouch originally published Dark Matter in 2016. The novel centers on Dessen, a physicist who suddenly finds himself in an alternate version of his life where instead of starting a family 15 years prior, he invented a device that allows people to visit parallel realities. During his travels through the multiverse, he also encounters an alternate version of himself who is curious about his doppelgänger’s life as a family man.
Apple TV+ has been developing Dark Matter as a series since 2020. However, a TV adaptation wasn’t always the plan. In 2014, Sony paid over $1 million for the film rights before the novel was even finished. Sony Pictures Television remains involved with the show as a producer.

Edgerton is currently gearing up for his return to Star Wars in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+. Last year, he starred in Amazon’s The Underground Railroad and also has a small role in The Green Knight. He previously received critical acclaim for his performance in Loving in 2016.
Aside from headlining the series, Edgerton will also executive produce Dark Matter alongside Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl. Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) is directing the first four episodes of the show.
Apple TV+ hasn’t set a release date for Dark Matter.
