Marvel Studios has officially announced Eyes of Wakanda, a new Black Panther spin-off animated series premiering on Disney+ next year.
Marvel recently held a press screening for the first two episodes of What If…? Season 2 (which premieres on Disney+ later this month). Attendees were treated to a sneak peek at the studio’s Disney+ animation slate for 2024. According to the likes of Matt Ramos and POC Culture, Marvel showed off X-Men ’97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (renamed from Spider-Man: Freshman Year), and the newly-revealed Eyes of Wakanda. The studio also reaffirmed plans for a third season of What If…?.
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther franchise so far
Marvel Studios first confirmed that Wakanda existed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron. Played by the late Chadwick Boseman, T’Challa/Black Panther himself made his MCU debut in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War. Boseman subsequently reprised his role in Black Panther’s first eponymous solo film, which released in 2018 from director Ryan Coogler and fleshed out the African hero’s home nation.
Boseman later portrayed Black Panther in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. He then posthumously reprised his role as the voice of T’Challa in the first season of What If…? in 2021. In 2022, Coogler returned to helm Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a sequel that saw T’Challa’s sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright), take up the mantle of Black Panther.
Back in 2021, news broke that Coogler was also attached to develop a Wakanda-focused series for Disney+. With the limited information currently available, it’s unclear if Eyes of Wakanda is that series, or a separate project entirely.
Eyes of Wakanda premieres on Disney+ in 2024.
