Neverwinter Goes to Space in Spelljammer Module

Gearbox Publishing and Cryptic Studios have announced Neverwinter: Spelljammer, the next module in their long-running MMORPG.

Spelljammer marks a significant leap forward for Neverwinter, as players get the chance to explore Wildspace for the first time. The free-to-play MMORPG promises to let players explore a new Adventure Zone, complete with new planets, quality updates, and a new Trial. Players can delve into the update when it launches on PC and consoles on November 7.

A press release for the module teased what players could expect in the brand new story. “In Spelljammer, reports of falling stars across all of Toril has led Lord Neverember to summon adventurers to investigate this ill omen,” it reads. “However, while bolstering the city’s defenses, the city of Neverwinter is struck by an astral seed – leading to an assault from Astral Elves of the Xaryxian Empire. During this battle, a spelljammer ship, the Moondancer arrives with the offer of assistance against his deadly empire and departs to Wildspace. Alongside the crew of the Moondancer, you’ll need to journey to various planets and convince the inhabitants to ally against the Xaryxian Empire and save Toril!”

Neverwinter: Spelljammer Adds a Beloved D&D World

Spelljammer first appeared in the Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition book Spelljammer: AD&D Adventures in Space in 1989. In 2022, developer Wizards of the Coast introduced a 5th edition version of the campaign setting in a box set. That bundle contained three separate books: Astral Adventurer’s Guide, Boo’s Astral Menagerie, and Light of Xaryxis. While inspired by the setting, Neverwinter: Spelljammer includes a new story to continue its ongoing narrative for the past decade.

In Neverwinter: Spelljammer, players explore new Landing Sites outside the usual Faerun setting. These sites are located throughout Wildspace, with multiple planets to explore. In addition, players get the challenge of facing down the Xaryxian Empire in a timed battle. These battles occur on a special Invasion site, where players must fight to save Toril.

Neverwinter: Spelljammer launches for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles on November 7. While built for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Neverwinter is optimized to run on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
