Marvel Will License 1-Act Plays to High School Theater Programs

Earlier this year, the students of North Bergen High School created an online sensation with their performance of Alien: The Play. But if Marvel has its way, the company may be able to ride some of that thunder into high school theaters across the country.

Via The Wrap, Marvel and theatrical company Samuel French are teaming up for three new 1-act plays that will be officially licensed to high school theater programs. Karen Zacarías is writing Squirrel Girl Goes to College. That’s a story about Doreen Green’s attempt to reinvent herself at her new school. Next, Mirror of Most Value, by Masi Asare, features Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan. In order to become a better heroine, Kamala has come to terms with herself. Thor and Loki feature in Christian Borle’s Hammered, which finds the sons of Odin in their youth as they compete for their parents’ favor.

“Over the last 80 years, the Marvel Universe has grown to inspire billions across the globe by telling relatable, personal stories reflecting the world outside our window,” said Marvel’s Stephen Wacker in a statement. “With these amazing plays and this uncanny group of talented playwrights, we hope to give the next generation of Marvel fans a chance to bring those stories to life and explore what it means to be a Super Hero right in their own backyard.”

Marvel and Samuel French will charge $75 per performance for a single 1-act play. For two or more plays, the price will be $125 per performance. Those are nominal fees, and anything beyond that will presumably go to the schools.
