Following the end of the Krakoan Age, the X-Men will rise from the ashes in July 2024.
On X (formerly Twitter), Marvel announced that it would be relaunching its X-Men line of comics next summer, complete with new ongoing titles. The publisher is keeping details under wraps for the time being. That said, it is worth mentioning that current Avengers editor Tom Brevoort shared the announcement as well, implying that the relaunch will see him take over Marvel’s X-Men books.
This past August, Brevoort announced that he would be parting ways with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in order to succeed Jordan D. White as the overseer of Marvel’s Merry Mutants. However, he also implied that this changing of the guard would not take place until after the conclusion of the current X-Men story arc depicting the fall of Krakoa.
The X-Men are about to begin the final battle for Krakoa
The X-Men’s Krakoan Age began in 2019 with the dual six-issue limited series House of X and Powers of X by Jonathan Hickman, Pepe Larraz, and R.B. Silva. The anti-mutant group known as Orchis dealt the nation of Krakoa an existential blow in this year’s X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1, thus setting the ongoing “Fall of X” event into motion. Following the disastrous events of the 2023 Hellfire Gala, Earth’s mutants have been left scattered and branded fugitives.
The X-Men aren’t going down without a fight, however. “Fall of X” will culminate in Fall of the House of X by Gerry Duggan and Lucas Werneck, as well as Rise of the Powers of X by Kieron Gillen and the aforementioned Silva. Launching in January 2024, these dual five-issue limited series bring the Krakoa era full circle as the X-Men unite for one last battle with Orchis.
Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X are also getting a number of tie-in series — including Resurrection of Magneto, Dead X-Men, Cable, and X-Men: Forever. The first three of those series launch in January, while X-Men: Forever kicks off in March.
While Marvel is keeping tight-lipped on what the post-Krakoa era holds, readers will apparently get their first glimpse at it in the upcoming Free Comic Book Day special Blood Hunt/X-Men #1. That comic — releasing on May 4, 2024 — enlists writer Gail Simone for a new story starring mutant hero Jubilee.
