Dynamite Entertainment brought back Disney’s Gargoyles as a comic in 2022 to great acclaim. Now the publisher is crowdfunding a reprint of the classic comics based on the beloved animated series. This will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original show.
The History of Disney’s Gargoyles Comics Explained
Gargoyles first came to comics in 1995 in a series published by Marvel Comics. Despite featuring art by Amanda Conner, the series was not a big seller and only lasted 11 issues. This may have been because it did not follow the continuity of the show.
Gargoyles returned to comics in 2006 in a book published by SLG. This series had the benefit of being scripted by series creator Greg Weisman. It was also notable for ignoring the third season of the cartoon, with was produced without Wiseman’s involvement after the premiere and is considered non-canon by many fans.
This series was cut short due to Disney raising their licensing fees. The final issues of SLG’s Gargoyles and Bad Guys miniseries only saw print in digest-size trade-paperback collections. As a result, the SLG and Marvel comics have become highly sought collectors items. It is for this reason that Dynamite is crowdfunding a new collected edition of these rare comics.
Dynamite Gargoyles Comic Collections Explained
The first TP volume will collect the Marvel Gargoyles comics. The second will collect the 2006 SLG series. The third will collect the Bad Guys spinoff series. All three volumes will be printed in standard comic dimensions, marking the first time some of these comics are seen as intended. These collections will also be offered in paperback and hardcover editions through a Kickstarter drive. There will also be deluxe hardcovers with signed tip-in pages and a 30th Anniversary Premiere Edition for the most devout Gargoyles fans.
All of Dynamite’s collections have the endorsement of Wiseman. “I’m honestly thrilled that these three volumes will finally give Gargoyles fans easy access to these great stories, including the canon SLG tales!,” Weisman proclaimed. “I think the Dynamite Kickstarter is a great way for Gargoyles fans to get the word out and to reserve their copies.
