Nia DaCosta Shares Her First Impressions of Directing The Marvels

As today’s Blade news reminded us, Marvel prefers to scout the indie scene for directors to helm their big-budget blockbusters. Presumably so that their experience with character-driven dramas can bring out the humanity in larger-than-life superheroes. Such was the case with Nia DaCosta, who broke out with the low-budget crime thriller Little Woods in 2018. DaCosta is now turning her attention to The Marvels, which teams Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers with Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, DaCosta explained how she’s adjusting to this sudden career boost.

It actually didn’t take that long for DaCosta to make the jump to big-name studio filmmaking. Shortly after Little Woods debuted, producer Jordan Peele selected her to direct Universal’s Candyman reboot, which arrives next month. Collaborating with Marvel Studios on their Captain Marvel sequel is a different beast altogether. But DaCosta sounds happy to be working on something with a lighter subject than her first two films.

“It’s a lot less traumatizing to work on for sure,” said DaCosta. “But this movie also deals with specific, personal, sometimes sad things. But no, it’s been nice to work in a different world for sure.”

DaCosta is currently working on The Marvels in London. And although some critics have complained that MCU movies tend to sacrifice a director’s vision in favor of a “house style,” DaCosta insists that her experience has been the exact opposite so far.

“It’s amazing,” added DaCosta. “[It’s] more [freedom] than I’ve had on anything. It’s great because we’re all just comic-book nerds who want to make a great comic-book movie.”

The Marvels will hit theaters on November 11, 2022.
