Alicia Vikander Says Tomb Raider 2 Hasn’t Been Greenlit Yet

Although the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot polarized longtime fans of the original video games, the film made enough money to justify a sequel. Unfortunately, Alicia Vikander’s next outing as Lara Croft has hit some bumps in the road over the last few years. MGM was initially planning to release a second installment last March, but the COVID-19 pandemic appears to have triggered a domino effect. Now, the movie’s release seems less like a sure thing. While speaking with Collider, Vikander has offered an update on the film’s status.

In late 2019, MGM hired Amy Jump to write Tomb Raider 2’s screenplay. Jump’s husband and frequent collaborator, Ben Wheatley, signed on to direct, and production was expected to begin in early 2020. But several months after the pandemic struck, Wheatley exited the project and the studio took the film off their release calendar. Hope resurfaced earlier this year when MGM brought MIsha Green onboard as the movie’s new writer and director. But it sounds like studio heads want to see a finished script before they actually move forward with the sequel.

“Pre-COVID, I would’ve said yes,” said Vikander. “And now I think it’s a yes still. It’s not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited and I would love to revisit Lara again.”

Vikander also confessed that she still doesn’t know what Green has in mind for Lara’s next adventure. Regardless, she sounds amped to suit up as the character for another go-round at the multiplex.

“It’s very recent,” continued Vikander. “It’s really now when the world is up and running again [that the script is being written], and Misha is onboard and she’s working on the script right now. So I’m very excited to sort of read something very soon.”
