Blake Lively Will Direct an Adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Seconds

Blake Lively To Direct an Adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Seconds

Over a decade after Scott Pilgrim vs. the World became a cult hit, Searchlight is hoping to find success with another Bryan Lee O’Malley comic. Via The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is developing an adaptation of O’Malley’s 2014 graphic novel, Seconds. The film will also mark Blake Lively’s feature directorial debut.

Seconds centered on Katie Clay, a restaurant owner who is visited by a mysterious girl named Lis, who gives her the ability to fix her past mistakes by writing them down in a notepad and eating a single mushroom. Although Lis’ rule is one mushroom per person, Katie discovers more mushrooms beneath her restaurant’s floorboards and uses them to correct other past transgressions. Unfortunately, her newfound abilities spiral out of control and threaten the stability of space-time itself.

THR doesn’t mention whether Lively is going to play Katie. Regardless, Searchlight’s adaptation of the book also features a script by Edgar Wright, the director of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Wright will also produce the movie alongside Marc Platt.

Lively’s only directing credit is a music video for Taylor Swift’s “I Bet You Think About Me,” which premiered last year. This is a far cry from directing full-length movie. However, her work on the video earned her nominations for directing and producing at this year’s Academy Country Music Awards.

Aside from Seconds, Lively is also currently attached to headline an adaptation of Dark Horse’s Lady Killer for Netflix. Her most recent film, The Rhythm Section, hit theaters in 2020.
