Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director James Wan has revealed if he has has future plans for directing new projects under James Gunn‘s rebooted DC Universe.
“No, not really. I mean, not really in a deeper sense,” Wan said in an interview with Screen Rant. “I know they’re in the middle of all that, so I’m sure it’s not something that you just whip up in one or two afternoons. I’m sure it’s a growing process and it depends on the different characters. I imagine that’s a pretty heavy task that they’re dealing with right now.”
Wan’s Aquaman sequel has been subjected to multiple reshoots and release date shuffles ever since the initial principal photography wrapped in January 2022. Gunn and producer Peter Safran were announced as the new bosses of DC Studios later that year, with The Suicide Squad director plotting a new continuity beginning with Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters.” Since then, recent DCEU releases such as Black Adam, The Flash, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods have underperformed with little chance of further stories to follow.
Jason Momoa’s DCU future
With the early opening weekend numbers for the Aquaman sequel tracking lower than its predecessor, star Jason Momoa‘s future has also come under scrutiny. Though the actor had stated previously that he would “always be” Aquaman, Momoa hinted at playing other characters in Gunn’s DCU, with Lobo being the top choice. Regardless of the studio shake-ups and the DCU’s future, Wan feels satisfied by his last Aquaman installment.
“I am just happy and feel like I was able to make my movie, work on my film that takes place within its own world, and not be affected by whatever other people are doing,” Wan added.
The official synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom reads: “When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.” The sequel stars Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Yahoo Abdul-Mateen II, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Kidman, Randall Park, Vincent Regan, Jani Zhao, Indya Moore and Pilou Asbæk.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will arrive in theaters on December 20.
