James Gunn Adds Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 VFX Team to Superman: Legacy

The Oscar-nominated visual effects team behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be back working with director James Gunn on the upcoming Superman: Legacy.

“Congrats to @stefceretti & the whole VFX team,” Gunn said in an Instagram post following the news of the Guardians team’s nomination for “Best Visual Effects” at the 96th Academy Awards.

“Our VFX crew worked tirelessly from top to bottom to create photorealistic characters and outrageous worlds. The world fell in love with Lylla, Floor, and Teefs – not to mention Rocket and Groot – because of them. Audiences were enmeshed in the Orgoscope and Arête and Counter Earth because of their amazing partnership with our production design department. They’ve already won my heart – which is why I’m bringing nearly all of them to Superman Legacy. But I’m so happy they have this honor as well.”

Many of Gunn’s VFX team members are veterans of multiple MCU projects under their belt. Stephane Ceretti worked on 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Disney+‘s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Guy Williams worked on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which earned him an Oscar nomination, while first-time nominee Theo Bialek was the VFX supervisor on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The production status of Superman: Legacy

With most of Gunn’s cast and crew already locked in, the director confirmed a March 2024 start date for principal photography to meet its summer 2025 release. “It’s going swimmingly,” Gunn said on Threads. “Sets being built, costumes being finished, actors studying roles, prosthetics and VFX models being made, flights booked. Here we go.”

David Corenswet plays the titular Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio is playing Eve Teschmacher, and Skyler Gisondo is playing Jimmy Olsen. Additional cast includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
