What do we know about Joker: Folie à Deux?
Joker: Folie à Deux is a sequel to 2019’s Joker, which was directed by Todd Phillips and saw Joaquin Phoenix play the character of Arthur Fleck/Joker. The movie was a massive hit for Warner Bros., bringing in over one billion dollars off an estimated budget of $55-70 million. Phoenix also won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film.
While Joker was originally intended to be a standalone movie, Phillips announced that a sequel was officially in development in June 2022. Phillips is once again directing the movie and co-wrote the script with Scott Silver.
Phoenix is reprising his role as Fleck in the movie, while Zazie Beetz will return as Sophie Dumond. Lady Gaga, meanwhile, is playing Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn.
Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, and Harry Lawtey are also playing undisclosed roles in Joker: Folie à Deux.
Following the initial announcement that Joker: Folie à Deux was in development, news broke that the DC Studios sequel would be a musical. Last month, Variety reported that it will be “mostly a jukebox musical” in the style of Mamma Mia! and Moulin Rouge. The full soundtrack has not been revealed at this time; although, it will supposedly feature 15 “very well-known songs,” one of them being “That’s Entertainment” from 1953’s The Band Wagon.
Joker: Folie à Deux releases in United States theaters on October 4, 2024, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
