Jeff Lemire’s streak of good luck in Hollywood continues. According to Variety, Lark Productions has just secured the television rights to Descender and its follow-up series, Ascender.
Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen launched Descender through Image Comics in 2015. The series traces the spacefaring adventures of Tim-21, a robot child who struggles to stay alive in a universe where androids are outlawed and bounty hunters are always looking to collect. After 32 issues, Lemire and Nguyen concluded the series in 2018. The following year, they debuted Ascender which picks up a decade after its predecessor. Whereas Descender embraced all the trimmings of science fiction, Ascender was steeped in fantasy tropes such as magic and vampires.

Lark, which falls under the NBCUniversal umbrella, will develop and produce the series with Lemire and Nguyen also onboard as executive producers. It’s still not clear who the production company has in mind to showrun the series or where it will eventually air. However, this isn’t the first time that Lemire and Nguyen’s comics have flirted with a live-action adaptation. Sony acquired the movie rights to Descender in 2015 and later hired Jesse Wigutow to pen the script. But somewhere along the way, this iteration of the project fell apart.
“The world of Descender and Ascender just keeps growing,” Lemire said in a statement. “And Dustin and I are very happy to be working with Lark to bring it to televisions screens as well. Their passion for the comics and devotion to telling the story the right way has us both very excited.”
“It’s definitely going to be an entirely new adventure to see our characters come to life onscreen and share them with a whole new audience,” added Nguyen.
