Superman: Legacy Casts Deadly Class Star as The Engineer

James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy has found its first villain in Deadly Class alum María Gabriela de Faría.

As broken by Deadline, de Faría will portray Angela Spica/The Engineer in the new DC Universe‘s first big-screen entry. The Engineer is a member of The Authority — a brutal team of superheroes originating from DC‘s Wildstorm imprint. Superman: Legacy is expected to introduce a number of Authority members as antagonists. The team will then spin off into its own DCU movie.

Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, Angela Spica debuted as DC’s second Engineer 1999’s The Authority #1. In the comics, Angela has nanotechnology built into her body — granting her such abilities as shapeshifting and enhanced durability.

De Faría is certainly no stranger to comic book-based projects. She previously starred as Maria Salazar in Syfy’s television adaptation of Rick Remender and Wesley Craig’s Image Comics title Deadly Class. In her home country of Venezuela, de Faría is perhaps best known for her leading role as Isabella “Isa” Pasquali on Nickelodeon’s Isa TKM.

Superman: Legacy flies into theaters in 2025

Writer-director Gunn — who also serves as co-head of DC Studios — recently confirmed that Superman: Legacy is still on track to release in July 2025 following the conclusion of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Newcomer de Faría joins a cast that already includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Loosely inspired by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman, Superman: Legacy takes place during Clark Kent’s early days in Metropolis. While trying to find his place in a world that views kindness as old-fashioned, the Last Son of Krypton will have to learn to reconcile his alien heritage with his earthly upbringing.

Superman: Legacy opens in theaters on July 11, 2025.
